The Rhizome Collective came to my attention through an article in the Austin American Statesman dated 3/25/08 entitled “Cheaper methods for an environmentally sound lifestyle” that caught my interest. http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/03/25/0325radical.html
In digging deeper I found they had a website. The information below is quoted directly from their site; I thought they could explain it much better than I could.
“The Rhizome Collective is a non-profit organization based out of a warehouse on the East Side of Austin, Texas. They operate an Educational Center for Urban Sustainability and a Center for Community Organizing. They are a consensus-run organization that teaches inexpensive ways to become ecologically self-sufficient in a city setting.
Scott Kellogg, co-founder of the Rhizome Collective, is available for speaking events and workshops. Workshops can vary in length and be tailored for specific audiences and interests. Fees are sliding scale, and can be negotiated.
Volunteering is a great way to be involved with the project and to get to know the community, while sharing your skills and learning new ones. See the Events Calendar for scheduled volunteer times. Also, we send out emails to our mailing list with announcements about work days and volunteer opportunities -send us an email asking to be added. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering apart from these scheduled hours.
Need to do community service hours? We are a 501(c)3 organization, and courts will accept hours done with us. Contact us for more info.
Limited internship opportunities exist for mature, self-motivated individuals. Because of the nature of our space and of our organization, we cannot provide housing for people from out of town or a highly supervised work experience. We welcome proposals for self-directed projects in conjunction with the Rhizome Collective. School-related projects are welcome and credit can be arranged. Please contact us with proposals.”
