Is your refrigerator making strange noises? Does your dishwasher leave you with left-overs still on the plate? Is the only time that the air in your living room moves is when the kids run through chasing the dog? Then this weekend you might want to do more than just have a barbeque with friends or family!!!!!Throughout the Memorial Day weekend, certain energy-efficient appliances, light bulbs and thermostats may be purchased without paying a sales tax.The sales tax-free weekend for energy-efficient appliances begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 26.Products eligible for the sales tax exemption must be designated as Energy Star qualified under the Energy Star program jointly operated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy. In addition to refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less and energy-efficient dishwashers, the products eligible for a tax exemption are: air conditioners with sale prices that do not exceed $6,000; ceiling fans; dehumidifiers; incandescent or fluorescent light bulbs and programmable thermostats.
The energy-efficient products tax-free weekend is the result of House Bill 3693 by Representative Joe Straus, which the 80th Texas Legislature passed in 2007. House Bill 3693 became effective September 1, 2007, so this is the first opportunity for Texans to take advantage of the energy-efficient product tax-free weekend. Unless it is repealed by the Legislature at some future date, the tax-exempt weekend for certain energy-saving appliances and products will be an annual event, such as the August tax-free weekend for school clothes and other apparel.
The tax-free weekend for certain appliances is just one of the provisions of a comprehensive Energy Conservation Incentive Program that passed the Senate unanimously during last year's regular session.
